Growth Dynamics Get Down

Fast Tip Friday: Choosing Promises Over Pay

Hey, everyone, Sarah Waple, President at Growth Dynamics.

Recently, I had a conversation with someone that started out as saying no to doing a job that would have put a little bit more money in their pocket, but would have impacted a promise this person made to someone they loved very deeply in their life. In this instance, it was a special needs child, and the original person turned down a job because they promised this child their trip to the park.

And he and I were talking about it, and I fully believe if you have a special needs child, you are a special person. You get to have that opportunity to learn so much, to be challenged so much—and just, that's my perspective based on our experience.

And this gentleman said something to me that I just could not stop thinking about, and still cannot. He said, "This was the mission I was given. So what am I going to do about it, but accept the mission and be happy and do the best that I can at this mission?" And for him, that works.

And it just landed so hard on my heart—about doing things that are challenging at times. Whether that's making the decision to be a parent, to start your own company, to go out there and help others or introduce or be in new spaces—that is the mission you have at that time.

So you should go out there and do it to the best of your ability, and be happy you have the opportunity to be on that mission. Other people would probably love your situation—maybe not—but at the time, you don't know that. And you don’t know where that mission will take you unless you go into it with your whole heart, and you are happy, and you can find a way to fulfill your mission.

So that is my advice to you. That's my motivation this week.

Now go out there and make this week the best one yet.
