Fast Tip Friday: Be Consistent at the Right Things

Jul 12, 2024 7:00:00 AM

One of the things that I hear from all of the people that I coach and all of the management/leadership that I interact with, is they're looking for consistency.

We want more consistency from our organization, from our operations team, from our inside sales team, from our customer service team, and, of course, with our business development team, everybody's looking for consistency, and I've always been kind of troubled by that word, if it's just used without any other definition.

One of the things I want you all to think about is consistency, in and of itself, doesn't mean it's good or what you want. I've seen plenty of people in business development that are so consistent I want to fire them about a week after I meet them. Now, what do I mean by that? They're consistent at not doing what they have to do. They're consistent at not taking and owning their own outcomes. They're consistent at making excuses. They're consistent in blaming other people, and they're consistently low performers. So when my clients say, "Look, we're really we want to help you come in and create consistency with our organization", I always want to make sure that we're talking about consistency in the right context.

Consistency in the wrong context trouble for everyone. And so this is my short, brief to the point reminder that if you're going to establish consistency, be consistent at the things that define and create success and take you above and beyond where you are today.

Don't be consistently mediocre, consistently content and consistently willing to make excuses when you're not getting things done. Consistency, on the positive side, is where we want you to be, and it's where you want to be if you want to see your career prosper and the future as bright as it can be, go out there, have a consistently awesome weekend.
