Fast Tip Friday: Become a Sales All-Star

May 9, 2025 7:00:00 AM

Alright everybody, Charlie Hauck, Fast Tip Friday time again. Hey look, we're into the spring, it's happened already.

We're probably halfway through the quarter wherever you are. And it's time to really take a look at what's the part of your game that's created these results versus what's the part of your game that's not created the results that you want. So I advise everybody to really take some time and slow yourself down and do a lot of introspection as to what is your best, most reliable tactic, what's the best part of your game that's getting you the results that you're most proud of?

Baseball season has just started and if you follow that sport at all, you know, there's a phrase that I think applies very, very appropriately to the world of business development. One of the things I think you've got to look at are you a five tool player, like they use that phrase in the baseball world, or you can you hit for power? Can you hit for average? Can you run the bases? Can you field your position? And do you have really good plate discipline? Do you really know what it means to be an efficient and effective person at bat in business development? There's five tool players as well, and you should know which one.

If any of those five tools you need to brush up on, there's prospecting. If you don't know how to prospect consistently and effectively, get better at it. If you don't know how to qualify an opportunity, and that means separating the prospects from the suspects and making sure that an opportunity that you're after is truly an opportunity and not just a glimmer of hope that you're too infatuated with. You should be the best decision maker in every meeting that you're going to be in or every conversation that you're gonna have, you should be able to be a really good deliverer of service. Nothing spells long term success and high value relationships like your ability to manage the service after the sale. As much as your job description allows, it never decided someone else's job to maintain your best relationships. And then you've also got to learn how to understand people.

We sell the companies, but we interact with the people inside those companies. So you should be able to know which part of your game, which one of those five tools you need to brush up on. Not saying you're not good at it, but how good can you be. And you should know which one of those plays, which one of those skills matters the most at the moment that you're in on a process of collecting a decision from someone. So just like baseball has those five tool requirements, you should also know the 5 tool requirements that it takes to be an all star in the world of business development. Don't say it's just the way I am and think that's acceptable any longer, cause it's not.
It's your choice to be better at anything you opt to be better at. Take it right now. Take that self assessment and decide what you need to work on for the next 30 days. Take one step at a time. You can't eat an elephant in one bite, but you can take nibbles anytime you want. Thanks for watching and listening. Have a great Friday and have a great weekend.
